Boat and pleasure craft insurance

Whether it's a tinny for weekend fishing, a family cruiser or a sailing yacht, your boat deserves cover built for life on the water. Pleasure craft insurance protects your vessel against damage, theft and sinking, and covers your liability if you damage another boat or injure someone. We arrange boat insurance for owners across Australia, on trailers, moorings and marinas.

Who needs pleasure craft and boat insurance?

  • Owners of runabouts, tinnies and fishing boats
  • Cruiser and yacht owners
  • Jet ski and personal watercraft owners
  • Boats kept on trailers, moorings or in marinas
  • Owners who race or travel offshore

What pleasure craft insurance can cover

Every policy is different. Depending on the insurer and options you choose, cover can include:

  • Accidental damage, sinking and storm damage
  • Theft of the boat, motor and trailer
  • Agreed value cover, so you know what you'll be paid
  • Legal liability to other people and their property
  • Salvage and wreck removal costs
  • Personal effects, fishing equipment and accessories

What to check before you buy

Check your navigation limits (how far offshore you're covered), whether racing is included, and how the policy treats motor damage and wear and tear. Where and how your boat is stored matters too, as some insurers require approved moorings or security. We'll match the policy to how you really use your boat.

Why arrange pleasure craft insurance through a broker?

Policies that look similar on price can differ a great deal in what they actually pay for. As your broker, we act on your behalf. We’ll ask the right questions, compare options, explain the fine print in plain language and be there to support you if you need to make a claim, wherever you are in Australia.

Pleasure Craft and Boat Insurance: common questions

Is boat insurance compulsory in Australia?

It's not legally required for most recreational boats, but marinas often require proof of liability cover, and the cost of a liability claim can be very high.

What is agreed value?

You and the insurer agree on your boat's value when the policy starts. If it's a total loss, that's the amount you'll receive, less any excess.

Does boat insurance cover my trailer?

Many boat policies include the trailer, but check the limit. We'll confirm it's covered while towing and while parked.

Am I covered if someone else is driving my boat?

Many boat policies cover other people operating your boat with your permission, provided they hold any required licence and meet the policy’s conditions. Some apply a higher excess for less experienced operators. Check the conditions before you lend your boat.

Is my boat covered while it’s being towed?

Many boat policies cover the boat and trailer while being towed by road, but limits and conditions vary. Liability for the trailer on the road may also involve the towing vehicle’s own policy. We’ll make sure there are no gaps between your boat and car insurance.

How to get a pleasure craft and boat insurance quote

Getting a quote is simple, and there is no obligation. Call Carly on 0497 100 469 or send an email with your business name and ABN, a short description of what you do, your approximate turnover and number of staff, a copy of your current policy schedule if you have one, and details of any claims in the last five years.

If your contracts or lease set specific insurance requirements, send those too.

We will ask a few questions about your operations, approach suitable insurers on your behalf and come back with options explained in plain language, including what is and isn’t covered. Once you choose, we arrange your cover and send your documents, then review it with you at every renewal so your insurance keeps pace with your business.
