Retail shop insurance for Australian retailers

Retailers depend on their stock, their shopfront and steady foot traffic. Theft, a smashed window, a burst pipe or a customer injury can all hit your bottom line hard. We help shop owners across Australia, from boutiques and gift stores to hardware, homewares and specialty retailers, put together cover that protects their stock and their income.

Risks retail shops face

  • Shoplifting, break-ins and theft of stock or cash
  • Broken shopfront windows and display cabinets
  • Water damage to stock from storms or burst pipes
  • Customers slipping or tripping in store
  • Liability for products you sell, including imported goods
  • Lost sales while you recover from an insured event

What retail shop insurance usually includes

Business Package Insurance

Stock, fit-out, glass, theft, money and business interruption in one policy, with seasonal stock increases available.

Public Liability Insurance

Covers customer injuries in store and products liability for the goods you sell.

Cyber Insurance

Protection for online stores, point-of-sale systems and customer data.

What to check before you buy

Stock levels change through the year, so check your sum insured covers your busiest periods, such as the lead-up to Christmas. Many policies offer automatic seasonal increases. If you import products directly, you may carry the same liability as a manufacturer under Australian Consumer Law, so your products liability needs to reflect that.

Why work with a broker?

Policies that look similar on price can differ a great deal in what they pay for. As your broker, we act on your behalf: we ask the right questions about your business, compare options, explain the fine print in plain language and support you through any claim, wherever you are in Australia.

Common questions

What insurance does a retail shop need?

Most retailers need public and products liability plus a business package covering stock, contents, glass, theft, money and business interruption. Online retailers should also consider cyber insurance.

Does shop insurance cover shoplifting?

Theft cover usually requires forcible and violent entry, so everyday shoplifting is often not covered. Some insurers offer limited options, which we can look at for you.

Does my landlord's insurance cover my shop?

Usually not. Your landlord typically insures the building, while you need to insure your own fit-out, stock and liability. Your lease will normally specify what you must hold.

Is my stock covered at markets or pop-up stores?

Usually only to a limited extent. Stock and equipment away from your premises often need general property or specific extensions, and market organisers commonly require proof of public liability. Let us know where you trade so your cover goes with you.

Does shop insurance cover a power outage that spoils my stock?

It can, if you have deterioration of stock cover. That covers perishable stock damaged by refrigeration breakdown or loss of power, though some policies exclude outages caused by the supply authority. We’ll check the wording for you.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote for your business is simple, and there is no obligation. Call Carly on 0497 100 469 or send an email with your business name and ABN, a short description of what you do, your approximate turnover and number of staff, a copy of your current policy schedule if you have one, and details of any claims in the last five years.

If your contracts or lease set specific insurance requirements, send those too.

We will ask a few questions about your operations, approach suitable insurers on your behalf and come back with options explained in plain language, including what is and isn’t covered. Once you choose, we arrange your cover and send your documents, then review it with you at every renewal so your insurance keeps pace with your business.
