Manufacturing insurance for Australian manufacturers

Manufacturers face a concentration of risk: valuable buildings and plant, stock at every stage of production, products going out to customers and supply chains that can be disrupted by a single event. Carly has worked with large manufacturing businesses throughout her career and understands how to protect them properly.

Risks manufacturers face

  • Fire or explosion damaging the factory, plant and stock
  • Machinery breakdown halting production
  • Products causing injury or property damage after they're sold
  • Goods damaged or lost in transit to customers
  • Supplier failures disrupting production
  • Cyber attacks shutting down production systems

What manufacturing insurance usually includes

Industrial Special Risks (ISR) Insurance

Broad property and business interruption cover for manufacturers with significant assets.

Public Liability Insurance

Products liability for goods you make, plus public liability for your premises and operations.

Marine Transit Insurance

Cover for raw materials coming in and finished goods going out.

What to check before you buy

Business interruption is often where manufacturers are most exposed. It can take many months to replace specialised machinery or rebuild a factory, so your indemnity period and gross profit figures need careful review. Ask us about machinery breakdown, product recall (arranged separately) and cover for losses caused by damage at a key supplier's premises.

Why work with a broker?

Policies that look similar on price can differ a great deal in what they pay for. As your broker, we act on your behalf: we ask the right questions about your business, compare options, explain the fine print in plain language and support you through any claim, wherever you are in Australia.

Common questions

What insurance does a manufacturer need?

Most manufacturers need property and business interruption cover (a business package or ISR), public and products liability, machinery breakdown and goods in transit. Cyber and product recall are worth considering.

Does products liability cover a product recall?

No. Products liability covers injury and damage caused by your products. The cost of recalling products is a separate specialised cover.

Should I choose ISR or a business package?

ISR suits manufacturers with substantial assets or complex operations. We'll compare both based on your values and risks.

What is machinery breakdown insurance?

Machinery breakdown insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing machinery after a sudden and unforeseen mechanical or electrical breakdown. Cover for the resulting loss of profit can often be added. General wear and tear and routine maintenance aren’t covered.

Are products I export covered by my products liability?

Not always. Many policies exclude or limit products exported to certain markets, particularly the United States and Canada. Tell us where your products are sold so we can confirm your cover applies to every market you supply.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote for your business is simple, and there is no obligation. Call Carly on 0497 100 469 or send an email with your business name and ABN, a short description of what you do, your approximate turnover and number of staff, a copy of your current policy schedule if you have one, and details of any claims in the last five years.

If your contracts or lease set specific insurance requirements, send those too.

We will ask a few questions about your operations, approach suitable insurers on your behalf and come back with options explained in plain language, including what is and isn’t covered. Once you choose, we arrange your cover and send your documents, then review it with you at every renewal so your insurance keeps pace with your business.
